Step outside and discover Tuscany on foot

The countryside around Garetto is made for walking. Quiet country lanes, woodland paths and trails wind their way through olive groves, vineyards and rolling hills, with beautiful views appearing around almost every corner. Whether you feel like a gentle morning walk or a more adventurous hike, there are plenty of ways to explore the landscape at your own pace.

For a memorable day out, head towards Orciatico and the Rocca di Pietracassia, an impressive medieval fortress hidden high in the hills. The walk takes you through peaceful oak woods and unspoilt countryside before reaching the ancient ruins, more than 530 metres above sea level. From here, the views stretch across the Valdera and Val di Cecina towards Volterra, well worth the climb.

Closer to Chianni, you can wander through the surrounding hills and oak forests or combine a walk with a visit to Rivalto.

Another lovely excursion leads through the woods towards the Ghiaccione waterfalls, where the Carbonia stream tumbles over the rocks into clear, refreshingly cold pools.

Pack some water, put on your walking shoes and take your time, out here, the journey is every bit as beautiful as the destination.
